Mexico Sends Diplomatic Note to the U.S. Over Criticisms

The Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) of Mexico sent a diplomatic note to the United States Embassy in Mexico expressing its astonishment at the statements of Ambassador Ken Salazar, who criticized the governance of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Salazar mentioned that Mexico faces a security crisis and questioned the "hugs, not bullets" strategy implemented by the former president.

In his statements, Ambassador Salazar was particularly critical of the mentioned strategy, considering it insufficient to address the high levels of violence in the country. He pointed out that violence is a serious problem that cannot be ignored and highlighted that the previous president closed the door to investments from the United States that could have contributed to improving security in Mexico.

The Secretariat of Foreign Relations reported that it sent the diplomatic note due to Salazar's statements during a press conference. This is the second time Salazar has been involved in a similar situation, the first being last August when his comments on reforming the Judiciary caused a pause in diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States.

Salazar's statements occurred after Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential elections on November 5. There is a possibility that Salazar may be relieved as ambassador to Mexico due to his controversial opinions.
